Tiger Global led a $75 million Series B funding round for RelationalAI, a startup that wants to change how data-driven apps are built by combining a database system with a “knowledge graph.” RelationalAI said today that it has raised this amount of money. Madrona Venture Group led the company’s Series A in 2021. Addition and Menlo Ventures also invested in this round, bringing RelationalAI’s total funding to $122 million.
Today, the company also announced that Bob Muglia, the former CEO of Snowflake, will join its board.
The goal is to let every business use the power of knowledge graphs, which is the technology behind things like Google’s “Knowledge Panel” in its search results. Molham Aref, the co-founder, and CEO of RelationalAI who was also the CEO of LogicBox and Predictix said that businesses can now put all of their data from different systems into one place thanks to data lakes in all of their different forms.
“You can only move the data into Snowflake, which is a shame. You can’t move the logic built into those applications “he said. “So you have de-siloed data. You had a lot of data silos, but now they are all in one place. But your knowledge is still in separate places. And by knowledge, I mean things like business logic, application logic, and so on.”
S. Somasegar, who used to work at Microsoft and is now the managing director of Madrona, agreed with this and said that businesses now have a data stack that is heavily influenced by how hyper-scale cloud providers build their systems, but they still can’t support what Somasegar calls “composite AI” workloads. These tasks, which he calls graph analytics, reasoning, and neuro-symbolic AI (symbolic AI + deep neural networks), are not what a traditional database system was made to do, so they are usually done by systems outside of the database.
This is where RelationalAI can help. With its system, developers can run queries and make ML predictions using the company’s declarative language, Rel. RelationalAI says it can cut the number of lines a developer has to write by 10–100 times. To make these knowledge graphs, developers can use Rel to “reflect over data, meta-data, and logic” and “model domain knowledge.”

The service is now in the “early access” phase, and the company thinks it will be ready for self-service by the beginning of 2023.
